Mark’s “Rant” for the month…..
I recently spent some time on Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park, reliving a wonderful period of my life from back in the 1960’s as a camper and staff member at Camp Ahmek, where I visited the historic but little known haunts of Tom Thomson.
Well, it’s been 100 years since this great Canadian icon & artist died under mysterious circumstances on Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park July 8th, 1917 and hardly no one really knows who he was!
What a shame!
Why didn’t we learn about Tom Thomson in school? Why don’t they learn about him these days in school?
Good questions?
Who should we speak with in “The System” to find out why they are not teaching our kids important Canadian history?
No idea!
Why are our children not reading the wonderful thought provoking & fascinating books by the great Canadian Historian Pierre Berton (The National Dream, The Last Spike, Niagara, History of the Falls) and so many more?
I just don’t get it!
Canadian history is so interesting and engaging yet the Primary and Secondary education system here in Ontario and likely across Canada skips right over the really good stuff!
More on my adventure tracking Tom Thomson’s last steps to follow in my next “Rant”
Stay tuned and have an EXTRAORDINARY month!!
